Be an Initiator
Always be an initiator in all meetings and tasks, if your team requires a special skill set on a tool which is being decided in a meeting, you should take the initiative steps to conduct training like finding the right trainer, with required devices and sending invites to required peoples.
Be an Active Participant
Play the active role in all stand-up and other meetings. Listen carefully and ask cross questions till you find the required information. Give enough time others to open their opinions.
Be a Motivator
A good lead always motivates the team members to improve their knowledge and continuous learning on different technologies. As a lead, you should provide the opportunities or path to the team to grow.
Be a good Troubleshooter and Mentor
When a team struggles to design SQL script or identifying test scenarios or finding test data or developing automation scripts, you need to guide them and find the result for unknown items by troubleshooting.
Learn your Delegation skill
Delegation is the vital role in leadership. Most of us are failing to be a good lead due to lack of this delegation skill, for that you should know the strength and weakness of each and every team member.
And you must know to break up the tasks into subtasks and assign those tasks to right peoples.
Ability to Handle Critical Situations
Most of the projects won’t go as planned, there are different situations would occur. For example, more issues prompted in UAT testing, huge testing to be done in very less time.
A leader should take this as a challenge and handle the critical situations without any hesitate.
Always think about Innovative ideas
A leader mind should think as what next and how we can reduce the effort with improvement in product quality which will be beneficial for stakeholders.
Forecasting based on the current project status and an amount of work to be done along with other factors, to find any risks and proactively prepare action items to mitigate the risk.
Never miss conducting Test Lead Feedback
Always give positive feedback if a resource completes a good job. Same time give cultivate feedback if you feel a resource did not do well and find the improvement steps to groom up. Most of the lead or manager are failing are not giving feedback or failing in feedback.
Encourage Team building activities
Build the team with full confident, credibility, accountability, knowledge sharing and work sharing.
Planning and Monitoring
Lead should be good in planning, monitoring, and re-planning. The lead should have forecast view of the project, based on he/she can think of any risk.
Good Decision Maker
No one can take right decisions in all situations, instead, the lead must have decision oriented thinking as well as if it cannot be by self then he must take it to the right associate.
Either team member or higher management to make the right decision.
Play as a Test Lead not a Boss
As we all know the difference between lead and boss, lead makes the team feel he/she is part of the team in anything, the boss is something commanding the team to get the work to be done. Hence always be part of the team which gives more comfort and improve the team relationship.
